"Training is the most important key to successful Scouting..."
Training - Youth

Youth Leadership Training (TLT)
Youth Leadership Training starts in the troop. Troop Leadership Training (TLT) is given primarily by the Scoutmaster and the senior patrol leader to all the youth leaders in their troop. At the end of TLT, all of the troop leaders will understand what is expected from them in their new leadership position. They will better understand the roles of each member of the leadership team (at the patrol and troop levels) and will learn to work toward a common vision of future success. They will learn that putting others first as a leadership style builds a strong and effective team. Upon completion of this training, the "Trained" patch may be worn below the youth leader's badge of office. TLT is conducted using BSA publication number 34306A, Boy Scout Troop Leadership Training. Den Chief Training (DCT)
Den Chief Training is available for Boy Scouts that offer service and leadership to Cub Scout Packs as Den Chiefs. This training is offered annually by the council. After completing this program, the Den Chief is entitled to wear the "Trained" patch below the Den Chief badge of office. For more information on Den Chief Training, Click»

Leave No Trace Trainer Course (LNT-T)
This 16 hour, overnight course trains interested individuals ages 14 and up to serve as Leave No Trace trainers. Trainers are the backbone of Scouting’s Outdoor Ethics program, providing instruction to individuals and units wishing to adopt cutting edge outdoor ethics into their outdoor programs. Each BSA Trainer course is taught by a recognized Leave No Trace Master Educator, so your training is recognized nationally by BSA’s partner, the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. Trainers are specially commissioned to teach the BSA Leave No Trace 101 course and to qualify individuals for the BSA Leave No Trace Awareness training card.
Note: Completion of this course, or another Leave No Trace Trainer course, is required for a youth to hold the Boy Scout/Varsity Scout Leave No Trace Trainer position of responsibility in his unit.

National Youth Leader Training (NYLT)
National Youth Leadership Training is a leadership development course designed by Boy Scouts of America to enable Scouting youth to lead their Scouting organization. NYLT uses the methods of scouting to teach leadership skills. A week is spent in an environment that exemplifies the "best" that Scouting can be and is the vision that Baden Powell intended. Youth will experience a "boy led troop" as the program is run by youth. This course is intended for Senior Patrol Leaders, Patrol Leaders, Instructors, and Troop Guides.

Seneca Waterways Council operates one of the largest and most successful programs in the Northeast Region at the Walmsley Sawyer Training Center, located at the J. Warren Cutler scout Reservation. Seneca Waterways Council employs the national program to deliver three NYLT courses each summer, allowing the participants a good selection of dates. Each course is limited to 48 participants to maintain the quality of the program. For more information on NYLT, Click»

Youth Staff Development Course (YSDC)
The Youth Staff Development Course is designed to train youth NYLT staff to be world-class presenters, evaluators and leaders of their council National Youth Leader Training course. YSDC engages participants in a full program with a wide variety of activities including:
  • Understanding, using, and evaluating the use of the NYLT Leadership Tools
  • *Making presentations on Leadership topics (you will make 5 presentations)
  • Learning how to prepare for and effectively evaluate a presentation
  • Quest for the meaning of Teaching Leadership
  • Participating in effective model NYLT activities such as realistic first aid, geocaching, instructional campfires, instructional inter-faith worship services, and use of the DVD

National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE)
The National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) is an exciting program where young men enhance their leadership skills in the Philmont Backcountry. Scouts will expand upon the team building and ethical decision making skills learned in National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT). NAYLE uses elements of the Philmont Ranger Training as well as advanced Search and Rescue skills to teach leadership, teamwork and the lessons of selfless service. NAYLE will offer Scouts an unforgettable backcountry wilderness experience where they live leadership and teamwork, using the core elements of NYLT to make their leadership skills intuitive.

The Philmont leadership is committed to making NAYLE a very special experience. Scouts will live in a patrol setting at Rocky Mountain Scout Camp where they use their leadership skills to resolve exciting and challenging backcountry situations. The week will conclude with a closing challenge for each Scout to build upon the legacy of Waite Phillips, the benefactor of the Philmont Scout Ranch.

NAYLE will equip youth leaders to be better troop leaders, NYLT staff members and/or superior camp staff. It will help guide their journey to become true "servant leaders", able to develop all members of whichever team they lead. It provides life skills for now and the future.

Scouts must be 14 and not yet 18, hold a troop leadership position and have completed NYLT. Councils may send a council contingent or troops may send their Patrol Leader Council. Concurrent adult training will be available most weeks at Philmont for contingent leaders.

From the start at the first Scout camp on Brownsea Island, training has played an important part in the development of Scouting.
