Traditional Camp Programs
The Footsteps of Hiawatha
The Footsteps of Hiawatha is Babcock Hovey’s first year camper program. The prograM has two distinct yet complementary aspects. First, it is Babcock Hovey’s main resource for first year campers, from a "Get Acquainted” tour to a survey of Camp Babcock Hovey’s flora and fauna, those new to camp will benefit from the Footsteps of Hiawatha. Second, it is designed to add rank advancement along with merit badge achievement. Most of the skills needed for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class are taught in this program. New Scouts can be instructed in everything from first aid to orienteering to menu planning.
The Footsteps of Hiawatha will run in the afternoon program time and administered by the Scoutcraft area. Scouts will be put into Footsteps of Hiawatha patrols and each patrol will receive a Counselor in Training as a Troop Guide. After the first afternoon session period patrols will move to different program areas in camp throughout the afternoon as a Footsteps of Hiawatha patrol, and enjoy activities in these areas. Scouts will participate in programs in the Scoutcraft, COPE, NAC, Personal Fitness, E/Con, Aquatics, and Health Lodge areas. These areas are where skill instruction will take place, but Scouts need fun as well, so other areas will be visited too.
The name of the game is FUN, but with a purpose. Each participant will get a real “hands on” program, in order to enhance his outdoor skills. This program is designed for skills instruction. We think this program is exciting and challenging for the new boys. It is the responsibility of the unit to sign the Scouts handbook.
Scouts who only need to work on certain requirements can visit in the afternoon on certain day to work on only those requirements. The schedule of requirements is as follows
