Norman Rockwell
Born in 1894, American artist Norman Rockwell had a long and affable association with the Boy Scouts of America.

His workng relationhip began 1913, when he joined the staff of Boy's Life magazine, as editor, illustrating stories and covers. He also illustrated Boy Scout books, such as "The Boy Scout Hike Book" by Edward Cave and "Boy Scouts Courageous" by Franklin K. Mathiews.

In 1916, he sold his first two covers to The Saturday Evening Post. It was at that time he decided that free-lance was best for his career and left his position with Boys' Life. With the event of World War I, he enlisted in the Navy in 1917 and was later discharged in 1918.

He was commissioned in 1918 by the Red Cross to paint four covers for their monthly magazine. The covers all featured a Boy Scout theme as a way to honor the Boy Scouts for help freely given during World War I.

1925 marked the beginning of the annual Norman Rockwell Boy Scouts calendar, published by Brown & Bigelow. For the next 52 years, each featured a Norman Rockwell Boy Scouts painting, and was America's most popular calendar for many years.

Rockwell did the paintings at no charge until 1929, after which Brown & Bigelow paid Rockwell for his work. Once a calendar was published, Boy Scouts of America was given all reproduction rights for his artwork.
